History

After being inhabited by indigenous peoples, Jamaica was also subject to Spanish Rule and eventually British Rule. Jamaica became independent in 1962 and the first ruling government was the Jamaica Labor Party. The country has proved resilient against many natural, poitical and economical disasters and to the day remains a proud country.

People

Jamaica has served as a melting pot for numerous cultures due to the ever-changing rule of power in the country. From indigenous people, slave owners to slaves, Spanish and British rulers - the country's history dating back to the 15th century provides a peek into why the majority of Jamaicans are multi-racial. Jamaicans are warm and friendly and will help out any stranger in need. However!! don't get on their bad side because Jamaicans have quite the temper!

Culture

Major cultural events include: Due to the mixture of races and people in the country, cultural events are widespread and ever-changing. One cultural event that has remained the same for years is Carnival. Carnival typically begins in mid-February with weekly soca parties and continues until the end of April or early May. Our dancehall/reggae culture is also extremely popular, especially due to Bob Marley, and is the reason many tourists venture to the island.
